Powers, Raymond Edward (b. 2 APR 1919, d. 22 AUG 1995)
Note: Raymond Powers, after graduating from Walden, New York High School, began his working life with the New York - New Haven Railroad. He stayed with the RR until the outbreak of WW II. At that time Ray enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served his country with honor as both an officer and a flier and, at war's end, remained active as a Captain in the Air Force Reserve.
In 1953, prominent Town of Montgomery leaders, impressed by Ray's honest work ethic, endorsed him for the position of Town Clerk. He won the election handily and after four years applied and was selected as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer of the Walden Savings Bank. In 1963, he was promoted to the position of Secretary-Treasurer. In 1966, Ray completed, with honors, the prestigious Graduate Banking School course at Brown University. Because of his dedication and devotion to the Walden Savings Bank, Ray was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1966. In January 1, 1968, Ray was elected to the presidency of the bank. During his 13 plus years of tenure as president, the Walden Savings Bank sustained remarkable growth and stature in the industry. He opened new branches in Washingtonville, Cornwall, and Montgomery. Because of his attainments as leader, the bank officials elected him Trustee Emeritus January 1, 1995. He retired from the bank May 19, 1995.
