Bevier, Jacob (Jacobus) (b. 18 AUG 1717, d. 17 JUL 1800)

Note: Jacobus was of strong vitality. He lived in Wawarsing with wife Anna. He joined Captain Cornelius Hoornbeek's Rochester Militia in 1738. Jacobus signed the Articles of Association in 1775 and enlisted in the 3rd (or Western) Ulster Regiment. Abraham Garrett Bevier stated in his book that at the time of the Fantinekill Massacre in 1779, Jacob Bevier lay sick and unable to move. "All the family had fled across the mountain, except an insane brother by the name of Daniel, who was sitting on the fence unaware of his danger, and a daughter who had resolved not to leave her father. The father expostulated with her, telling her that if the Indians came she could not save him that they both must inevitably fall before the tomahawk and the scalping knife." At length she was persuaded to go and made her escape in safety. How Jacobus survived we'll never know, but he lived for many years thereafter.
