In 1891-92 he was assistant foreman at Howe Scale Co. in Rutland, Vermont. Lived in Auburn during the Census of 1900. He was listed in the Auburn Directory of 1900 as an agent for D M O & Co., lived at 24 Sherman St. In 1906, he was listed in the Auburn, NY City Directory as a travel agent and lived at 35 Wood Street. At the time of his second marriage in 1908, he resided in Auburn, New York and was a traveling salesman. In 1910, he resided with his second wife Annie in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. His occupation was Division super intendant of an international correspondence school.

Note: He was a clerk and mechanic in Auburn, New York in 1890. James is listed as being employed at Howe Scale Co. in Rutland, Vermont in 1891-92 along with his brother, Eugene L. Bevier. He was then a contractor and builder in Syracuse, New York. He resided in Skaneateles, New York in 1900. In 1906, he was listed in the Auburn City Directory as a carpenter living at 8 Maple Street. In 1910, he lived in Ward 1, Auburn, NY. In 1920, he and his family lived in Syracuse, New York and he was listed as a roofing salesman. He broke his back in a fall from a scaffold. He lived in Syracuse, NY in 1930 also.
