Bodley, William (b. 9 JUL 1764, d. 2 NOV 1843)

Note: William undoubtedly had plenty of experiences with Indians in the Wawarsing area. One family legend says that one day he was with Conrad Bevier and some Indians were throwing tomahawks at the pulpit in the Wawarsing Church. William and Conrad decided to have a crack at them. One was seen standing in the doorway of the church. They crept along a fence in the bushes near the church until they came within gunshot. Conrad leveled his gun and drew the trigger, but it snapped.
The Indian looked around as though he had heard it. Conrad tried again, and again it snapped. William then fired and they both started at a run for the fort a quarter of a mile away. As Conrad passed under a bough of an apple tree, a shot from the Indian cut off a limb just above his head. William fired and the shot struck the door post of the church grazing the Indian's head. The mark of the tomahawk in the pulpit and the ball hole in the door post made relics that were pointed out and talked about for a long time. William Bodley was in the Revolutionary War as a New York State Militia member. He also served in the Revolution in the Virginia State Troops and received 80 acres of land in Richland County, Ohio as bounty for serving.
